Botrugno is located on a plateau between the Serre Salentine of Supersano and those of Poggiardo. Its name could derive from the Greek verb Botruomai which means 'to produce grapes'. In fact, in ancient times, the area on which the urban area later arose was occupied by enormous vineyards. Originally founded by the Greeks, Botrugno began to develop after the destruction of the nearby Muro Leccese by William the Evil in the 12th century. Among the beauties of Botrugno it is possible to visit the marquis palace, built in 1500 by will of the Castriota family, with a rectangular plan and can be admired for a majestic balcony which occupies almost the entire façade. Nearby stands the Church of the Madonna of Constantinople, currently known as the Church of S. Antonio, in baroque style where you can admire a Byzantine image of the Virgin and Child (15th century), a Renaissance tomb from 1564 and valuable Baroque altars. On the outskirts of the town, in the direction of Sanarica, stands the Chapel of the Assumption, built around the 14th century and rebuilt in the 18th century.
